About The Oregon Community Education Association (OCEA)

The Oregon Community Education Association (OCEA) was founded in 1973 to provide a forum for educators and citizens to advance the community education concept. OCEA is a non-profit Oregon corporation for strengthening community education programs in schools and colleges, for promoting lifelong learning, school volunteerism, mentorships, youth service learning, and public involvement in schools and community planning. Incorporated March 19, 1975 OCEA is recognized as a 501(c)3 organization. Contributions are tax-deductible. Federal identification number: 93-0646992.

What is Community Education?

Community Education is a concept that provides opportunities for local community members, schools, colleges, and other organizations to become partners in addressing educational goals and community concerns. It is a way for people to enhance their lives and communities through learning and collaboration.

What are the components of Community Education?

Lifelong Learning
Understanding that learning continues throughout life.
Providing formal and informal learning opportunities throughout all of life's stages.
Providing programs and services for all community members, including opportunities for inter generational interaction.
Community Involvement
Promoting a sense of civic responsibility.
Providing opportunities for community members to develop their leadership skills.
Promoting the inclusion of diverse populations in all aspects of community life.
Encouraging community involvement in local decision-making.
Efficient Use of Resources
Utilizing fully the community's physical, financial, technical and human resources to meet diverse needs.
Reducing duplication of services by promoting collaborative relationships among schools, colleges, organizations, and agencies.

What is a Community School?

A community school is a facility that is open during and beyond the traditional school day to provide academic, extracurricular, recreational, health and social services, and work force training and/or preparation programs for people of all ages.
